Mastercard Foundation partnered with Makerere University to offer 1000 Scholarships to academically talented but financially constrained youth from Africa to pursue their University Education at Makerere University. The Scholarships have been allocated to 70% Young Women and 30% Young Men. There is further categorisation including:
  1. Undergraduate Programmes: 95%
    • Refugees and Internally Displaced youth: 25%
    • Young People with Disabilities: 10%
    • International students: 10%
    • Students transitioning from schools located in highly ranked poor sub-regions: 20%
    • Refugee hosting communities and minority tribes: 10%
    • Other vulnerable youth, including the Urban poor: 20%
  2. Master's Programmes: 5%
Note: To be eligible, one MUST successfully apply for admission to Makerere University Main Campus under the Private Sponsorship Scheme.
The Scholar receives a comprehensive financial package for Tuition, Accommodation, Meals, Scholastic Materials and Incidentals. Other benefits include Health Insurance and a Laptop. This financial support allows Scholars to focus entirely on their academic and personal growth, fostering a stress-free learning environment.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholarships at Makerere University do not have any specific cut-off points for applications. If you have been admitted to study at Makerere University, you qualify to compete for the e scholarships.
Holding any other scholarship disqualifies you from applying for a Mastercard Foundation Scholarship. To ensure fairness, applicants cannot opt out of an existing scholarship to apply for the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship. Applicants will not incur any application fees when applying for Mastercard Foundation Scholarships at Makerere University. The entire process is free of charge, ensuring that financial considerations do not hinder access to education opportunities.
Yes, Refugees and Displaced young people can apply for Mastercard Foundation Scholarships at Makerere University. They are prioritized categories for these scholarships.
Generally, the Program does not cover Application Fees for Admission to Makerere University. The Program considers only those applicants who have successfully been admitted to Makerere University. However under unique circumstances, e.g. Female Refugees, support may be extended
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University provides a limited number of Master’s scholarships, accounting for just 5% of the available opportunities. There are no Scholarship opportunities for PhD studies.
The Scholarships are extended to those students joining the University for the very first time-First Year Students only.
