Phase One of the Program (2013-2024)

The Goal:

To educate and empower the next generation of African leaders.

Mission:

To enable academically talented but economically disadvantaged youth in Africa to access quality undergraduate education and transform into enterprising leaders meaningfully contributing to development.

Objectives:

  1. Enable economically disadvantaged students from Africa to complete an undergraduate program by offering support to qualified individuals.
  2. Provide Scholars with mentoring, career counselling, and internships to facilitate their transition to higher education or employment.
  3. Cultivate a network of next-generation chievers and leaders committed to service and giving back. Integrate a give-back component into the program to transition Scholars from beneficiaries to benefactors.
  4. Establish a network of Scholars to leverage peer support, youth engagement, and social media opportunities.
  5. Expand a collaborative network of renowned partner organizations committed to working together to achieve the vision of education as a catalyst for social transformation within the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program.
  6. Ensure efficient and effective operational and strategic management of the project.

1. Individual

  • Post-graduation Transition (n=964, graduated by 2025)
    • 37% -Formal employment (72% in private sector)
    • 11% - Entrepreneurship
    • 3.8% -Engaged in Further Education,
    • 12 % -Engaged in Multiple pathways
  • 46 Entrepreneurship ventures supported
  • Partnerships with Private Sector Foundation and Africa Career Network that enabled Post-graduation Transition
  • Partnerships with other Universities for Scholarships for Masters’ studies

2. Institutional

  • Increased enrolment of Young Women at the University
  • 92 Academic Staff trained in providing Mentorship
  • A Policy streamlining Career Guidance and Mentorship services in the University
  • Expanded network of partners for Makerere University
  • 28 Makerere Students (non-Scholars) participated in the Entrepreneurship initiative

3. Ecosystems

  • Community Giveback Projects: Boreholes, 4 Classroom Blocks; COVID-19 Relief Materials; Material support to 2 Childcare centers
  • 148 Jobs Created in the communities by 43 Business Ventures by Scholars
