Support Services

Services for Scholars and Scholar Alumni

Financial Support:

The Scholar receives a comprehensive financial package for Tuition, Accommodation, Meals, Scholastic Materials and Incidentals. Other benefits include Health Insurance and a Laptop. This financial support allows Scholars to focus entirely on their academic and personal growth, fostering a stress-free learning environment.

Comprehensive Orientation to the University:

The Program organizes a detailed orientation engagement to ensure that Scholars have a smooth transition into university life. The orientation is designed to familiarize Scholars with the university environment, academic expectations, and available resources.

Research and Internship Funds:

Makerere University students engage in internship or field attachment activities and undertake Academic research. All Undergraduate Scholars mandated to undertake research projects and Internship/Field Attachment as required by the Programme of Study are facilitated.

Career Guidance and Mentorship:

The Mentorship services shall be guided by the Makerere University Career Guidance and Mentorship Policy, 2025. The Mentorship Handbook 2025 stipulates additional support guidelines specific to the Scholars Program at Makerere University.

Psycho-social support and Skills Development:

All Scholars receive mental wellness and psycho-social support from the Program Team and other support units of Makerere University, including the Makerere University Counselling and Guidance Centre. Psychosocial support services are customized based on the Scholars needs and experiences.

As part of the wrap-up support for holistic education, the Scholars receive capacity building in the focal areas of Career Planning, Transformative Leadership, Entrepreneurship, financial literacy and other related soft skilling. The Scholars are expected to enroll in the Baobab Platform for more skilling programmes and the Makerere University e-courses for support services on the MUELE Platform.

Academic Support Services:

The Program conducts regular academic monitoring and progress reviews to identify and address challenges early. Scholars benefit from constructive feedback and personalized interventions, ensuring comprehensive support throughout their educational journey.

Leadership Development and Opportunities:

The leadership development program is designed to cultivate a culture of transformative leadership that recognizes leaders as visionaries, creating a sense of purpose and direction for team members and equipping them with the tools and resources necessary to reflect and reimagine a future of positive and lasting change.

Community Service and Giving Back Ethos:

Giving back is a core principle of the Scholars Program, and fostering a service culture is one of our key objectives. Scholars and Scholar Alumni are encouraged to engage in community service and giving back to foster a sense of responsibility and commitment. From the moment scholars are recruited, we emphasize the importance of contributing to the community, no matter how small the gesture.

Entrepreneurship Development and Scholars Entrepreneurship Fund:

The Entrepreneurship Development Program is designed to change the mindset about entrepreneurship and create innovative and sustainable social enterprises that will create employment opportunities for Scholars and other young people in their community. Therefore, the Program is designed to encourage Scholars to appreciate entrepreneurship as a transition pathway from the University to the world of work. The Scholars Entrepreneurship Fund provides a seed funding for competitive entrepreneurship ideas. The fund is administered competitively to support the ideation and incubation of for-profit and non-profit ventures for Scholars. Scholars' Entrepreneurial ventures, in this context, are seen as vehicles for young people to create transformation and impact.

Support for Students with Disabilities:

Students with disabilities will be provided with reasonable accommodations within the Program and Makerere University provisions. This includes but not limited to services of the University Disability Resource Unit and personal assistive devices. For every Cohort, needs assessment for reasonable accommodations and/or assistive devices are conducted.

Remedial Support

Remedial Support refers to the educational assistance provided to students who require additional help to meet their learning objectives. The support focuses on addressing the student’s specific challenges including One-Year Retake Support, Tutoring/coaching Support, and Support for English Proficiency, particularly for Scholars coming from a non-English speaking background

Post-graduation Transition support:

Transition preparedness is Journey from the first Semester of Year One for each Scholar. This is through a series of transition engagements including career readiness, industry visits, Career Fairs and work readiness boot camps.
